Working with Specio

In time, his path crossed with Specio, where he became intrigued by the material at hand. In many ways, the durability of CeramicSteel aligned closely with his advocacy for timeless and sustainable design. A material so robust in its core, yet remarkably free in shape, form and color. And by extension, in its application. Rather than seeing it as a fixed single-purpose product, he reconsidered the material: where else could this work?

“That’s how we started reframing the material and opening it up to entirely new applications in architecture, more suited to interior design. ”

— Jaap Hoens, Creative Consultant

From there, he became closely involved in shaping new products and positioning them in new markets — as was his expertise. By contributing to the development of surfaces and panel systems, he helped translate the material into usable products. Together with Specio, he looked for new applications across sectors, pushing the material’s versatility to its limits.

The eye behind the Ease collection

Jaap has always trusted his gut when it comes to design. His work reflects this in honest and unembellished lines and shapes. He prefers palettes that hold their relevance instead of chasing fads. While strongly guided by intuition, he also demonstrates a clear understanding of light and color temperature theory, carefully considering how color shapes mood, atmosphere, and the overall experience of a space.

Designing the Ease Collection for Specio was no exception. From full wall cladding to wall partitions and subtle accents in the room, the colors are designed to invoke a natural sense of serenity. Inspired by nature, the result draws from softened tones of earth, foliage and sky. Each element works as a standalone accent, yet combines effortlessly with the others. This opens up a realm of creative possibilities, highlighting even more just how versatile the material can be. Whether in healthcare, offices, hospitality or residential environments, Ease enhances the mood without overwhelming it.

“Buildings are often so static, and the material is quite harsh.
So why not bring more softness and feeling into those spaces?”

— Jaap Hoens, Creative Consultant
